Function is a worktag used for functional classification of expenditures to support external and federal reporting.
Function
Function is assigned to driver worktags as a default related worktag to align with NACUBO functional expense definitions that best apply to the types of expenses posting to a driver. Function is assigned by Central Finance at the time a new driver worktag is established.
Examples: Instruction, Research, Public Service, Academic Support, Institutional Support, Auxiliary, and Scholarships & Fellowships.
Function worktags are given a unique name that succinctly reflects its purpose.
Examples of functions in Workday:
- Academic Support
- Plant Funds
- Scholarships & Fellowships
- Student Services
Only one top-level function hierarchy exists in Workday, and all function codes are assigned to it.

The Controller maintains sole review and approval authority over requests for function creation and maintenance. If you would like to request a new function worktag or maintenance to an existing one, please contact the Controller's Department.

- View Custom Organization - Function worktags are a type of custom organization in Workday. Use this report to view details on any custom organization. When prompted, enter the custom organization. You can filter the organizations by selecting All Custom Organizations by Type, and then selecting Function.
