What are hierarchies?

  • Hierarchies group worktags together in a meaningful way.
  • Hierarchies can be assigned as superior and subordinate to one another to create a parent-child relationship between hierarchies.
  • Superior and subordinate hierarchies establish a roll-up relationship so that transactional data in subordinate hierarchies “rolls up” to the parent hierarchy to streamline reporting.
  • Hierarchies enable us to reduce data entry and security role assignments. For example, instead of assigning security roles individually to all worktags within a hierarchy, we can assign security at the hierarchy level, and those role assignments inherit down to the individual worktags within the hierarchy.

What purpose do hierarchies serve in Iowa State University finance?

FDM worktag hierarchies serve multiple purposes:

  • An IRT hierarchy groups funding sources to support “all funds” reporting.
  • A General Ledger hierarchy groups spend and revenue categories by following the management reporting structure. This hierarchy is the official ledger reporting structure for all reports created and maintained by Central Finance.
  • A new Cost Center hierarchy structure combines the Business Unit hierarchy structure with the ability to create additional Cost Center roll-ups below Business Unit. This hierarchy is available for running all existing reporting and facilitates all-funds reporting throughout the university.
  • New driver worktag hierarchies will support future FDM enhancements and information availability.

All top-level hierarchies have a business owner who is accountable for proper hierarchy usage.

The Strategy and Oversight Committee reviews and approves hierarchy creation and maintenance.
